Introducing Our New Maungatautari Honey Range
Nestled in the heart of the Waikato, Maungatautari Sanctuary Mountain is the world’s largest mainland ecological island. Protected by an extensive predator-proof fence, its 3,400 hectares of thriving native forest have become a safe haven for some of Aotearoa’s most precious species, including the North Island brown kiwi, takahē and the once-near-mythical kākāpō. The forest canopy and undergrowth hum with life, supporting kaka, hihi (stitchbird), giant wētā, and popokatea (whitehead), all flourishing once again in this restored environment.
Our Maungatautari Honey is gathered from the foothills and countryside that surround this extraordinary sanctuary. The diverse native flora from rātā and mānuka to kamahi and kōwhai provides seasonal nectar from spring through autumn, producing a honey rich with character and unmistakably shaped by the land it comes from. Because native plants do not produce nectar every season, each year’s harvest is truly unique. This season’s honey is notably light in colour, hinting at the delicate influence of rātā nectar a rare treat only nature can decide to gift.
By choosing Maungatautari Honey, you’re tasting the story of a living landscape and helping protect it. With each jar sold, we donate 50 cents towards the ongoing care of this remarkable eco-sanctuary, supporting the protection of endangered species for generations to come.
